In this video clip (Quicktime 5.2mb) it’s the battle of the t-shirts. Resist Or Die vs. Club Gitmo.

I’m guessing this woman is not a Rush Limbaugh fan.

THE FOUNDING FATHERS WOULD BE IN GITMO?
Friday October 21st 2005, 12:27 am

I have just received the following quote from tonight’s lecture. I can’t account for it’s authenticity because I was not in the room, and it was sent from an anonymous email account. Can anyone who attended please verify the content of this quote?

If you feel especially free tonight, you probably don’t want to do anything – if you’re not, you’ve probably got motive to do something now, it’s on you to figure out what – I’m not your commanding general, Yes? Aside from which I’m not gonna stand here and commit sedition. ….. I’m not a terrorist and I’m not a seditionist – I’ll leave that to Thomas Jefferson and the other founding fathers, okay? (room laughter) All of whom would be sitting in Guantanamo Bay if they were running around now doing what they did then.

Ward Churchill
October 20, 2005

If true, he seems to be using code to tell students to commit acts of terror, or as he sees it, good old fashion revolution.

UPDATE: QUOTE CONFIRMED. Thanks to Derrick for confirming the contents of the quote.

GREAT NEWS

Filed under: Crushing Of Dissent, DePaul Cultural Center, James Doyle, Nick Hahn

I have just received a report that Nick Hahn, despite being banned from the Cultural Center, was allowed in to the event tonight. I hope that he is given a chance to ask a question.

To his credit, I am hearing that James Doyle, Vice President for Student Affairs himself, made sure that Nick had access. Nice move DePaul! That is exactly the type of fairness the DePaul Republicans were asking for. There are still other injustices in this story, but let’s at least give credit where it is due when the University behaves correctly.

THE DETAILS OF THE EXCLUSION

Filed under: Crushing Of Dissent, DePaul Cultural Center

Here is a copy of the email the Cultural Center sent to the DePaul Republicans, dated Oct 10, 2005 10:52 AM, after they signed up for the Churchill events scheduled for Friday October 21st.

Hello,
You had signed up for the Ward Churchill Lecture on October 21st. I was mistaken and neglected to inform you that this day is for organizations that are part of the Human Rights Group and therefore the lecture on the 21st is by invitation only. You are more than welcome to come to Mr. Churchill’s lecture on Thursday October 20th. To clarify there are no cameras or recording devices allowed at this lecture. If you have any further questions please call the Cultural Center at 773-325-7759. Again I am sorry for the confusion but do hope that you can make it on the 20th.

Thank You,
Alexandra Bancroft
Cultural Center

That’s interesting, because the Cultural Center’s own website, as cached by Google on Oct 14, 2005 08:02:20 GMT, clearly states that the event is “For Student Organizations Only”. Of course now their site reads “Open to Student Organizations which are supported by Cultural Center’s Allocation Fund.”

They hadn’t even bothered to change the original rules 4 days after they changed them to conveniently exclude the DePaul Republicans.

DePaul doesn’t want there to be any record of tonight’s human rights lecture by Ward Churchill. Clearly they must be ashamed of what Ward might say. I hope someone at least takes notes and makes a transcript available. Here is the RSVP letter sent to all attendees:

I wonder how many other events DePaul holds that they don’t want a record of?

EILEEN BYRNE - WLS AM RADIO
Thursday October 20th 2005, 11:45 am
Filed under: Background, Ward's Own Words, Grant Crowell

Eileen Byrne of WLS AM radio has been following the Ward Churchill-DePaul developments. You can see posts on her blog here.

Today she took a call from Grant Crowell, a local filmmaker who is producing a documentary about Ward Churchill. Grant first became acquainted with Ward when, according to Grant, Ward publicly supported the idea of Grant’s murder. Pay special attention to the last paragraph.

Fall 1994. I was a college student and editorial cartoon columnist for the Ka Leo O Hawai‘i – the newspaper at the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa campus in Honolulu. Like many academic environments, we had our share of “sacred cows” – issues and individuals considered to elicit such a volatile reaction by local activists groups and ultra-radical (and narrow-minded) professors that oftentimes they were ignored or actively avoided, lest a demonstration appear outside our newspaper building (or on some tempestuous occasions– people storming into the building and stealing papers from bins.)

At this same time, Ward Churchill was being flown in by the UH student senate for a paid speaking engagement on his then-latest book, Fantasies of the Master Race: Racism in the University.

Coincidentally, the student newspaper had just published a cartoon of mine that caused outrage among ultra left-wing activists: I had depicted one of Ward Churchill’s close colleagues on our campus, Professor Haunani K.

Trask, the University’s Hawaii Studies Director, reading an excerpt from her recently published poetry book, entitled “Racist White Woman,” who described in lurid detail her fantasy of punching, knifing, mutilating and ultimately murdering a white colleague she despised.

Churchill arrived, as planned, and began his speech. Shortly thereafter, Churchill’s speaking engagement suddenly changed from what was publicized as a book discussion and open forum into a public protest rally led by Trask and Churchill, both of them blaring into microphones over my “racist cartoon” and demanding my firing from the newspaper and expulsion from the university.

During Churchill’s speaking time at the event, this man – a man who had never met me and refused to do so before and during the event – included in his speech a reference to me as “vermin,” and shared aloud a story of an unnamed Nazi cartoonist who was tried at the WWII Nuremburg trials, executed, dismembered and then cremated. Churchill’s ended this story with his own personal comment of, “Now, I’m not saying that should happen to Grant, but it would be a good thing.”

Mr. Churchill will be lecturing to DePaul students on the topic of human rights.

BANNED STUDENT COMPARED TO CHURCHILL?
Thursday October 20th 2005, 11:07 am
Filed under: James Doyle, Nick Hahn

According to DePaul student Nick Hahn, who has been banned from the Cultural Center, one of the DePaul administrators who refused to rescind Ward Churchill’s lecture invitation has compared Nick to Churchill in a derogatory way.

Mr. Jim Doyle felt it incumbent upon himself to compare me to Ward Churchill. “What’s the difference between Churchill using the term ‘little Eichmanns’ and you saying I stand for al-Qaeda?” The difference is Churchill was denigrating innocent victims of reprehensible acts, I was exposing the fact that if, in Mr. Doyle’s professional capacity, he doesn’t rescind Churchill’s invitation, he subsequently and passively supports Churchill’s views…which are those similar to al-Qaeda’s.

Why if Mr. Doyle thought so low of Ward Churchill, did he not cancel this nonsense from the beginning. Surely if Mr. Doyle believes there is no difference between Nick and Churchill, Ward should be banned from the Cultural Center too……Right?

MEET NICK HAHN

Nick Hahn

Clip 1 - Quicktime(13mb)
Clip 2 - Quicktime(11mb)

This is Nick Hahn. He is a 4th generation DePaul student. He has been very vocal about his opposition to DePaul’s support of Ward Churchill. He operates a blog, and he has been on several radio programs making his views known, and this has upset the university administration.

Nick offers his first hand account of meetings he has had with James. R. Doyle - Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Harvette Grey, Ph.D. - Director of the Cultural Center , and others. He details the explanation he received as to why the DePaul Republicans were denied approval to hang posters that have been judged by the office of Student Life to be ‘propaganda’.

He admits to engaging in a hostile conversation with the director of the Cultural Center, Dr. Harvette Grey, Ph.D., in a meeting that led to his being banned from the organization in it’s entirety. He may not contact Dr. Grey in any way, and may not enter the Cultural Center ever again.

Much more to come about Nick Hahn.

COUNTER PROTESTS
Thursday October 20th 2005, 8:04 am

Marathon Pundit has information about a counter protest being called for on Indymedia in an effort to support Ward Churchill.

The Activist Student Union (ASU) of DePaul University is calling for all people concerned with defending Ward Churchill’s views and with defending academic freedom, to rally at DePaul.

Churchill was invited by DePaul’s Cultural Center and the ASU to speak because of his political views and his history of standing up and fighting for human rights and dignity.

Unless you were a little Eichmann who used to work at the WTC. In that case you had no human rights and deserved no dignity.

Were it not for right-wing attacks that have included threatening letters to the staff at the Cultural Center and a letter from the Governor of Colorado urging DePaul to cancel this event, this speaking engagement would be open to all.

I’d like to see them produce one of these “threatening” emails.

there is a lot more to come, especially over the next two days as Ward speaks, so please check back for updates.

Todd Beamer, one of the heros of 9/11 doomed flight 93, is a graduate of DePaul University! He received his masters from the same school that financially supports Ward Churchill, who called the victims of 9/11 “little Eichmanns”.

Why would DePaul Universtiy support a man who spits on the memory of their Alumni???

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE TO DEPAUL
Wednesday October 19th 2005, 9:24 am

Colorado Governor Bill Owens has a message for DePaul University. Are they listening? Here is an excerpt from a letter the governor sent to concerned students at DePaul University.

In considering whether or not to host University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill as
a guest lecturer, the leadership of DePaul University has arrived at a teaching moment.
To give this man a platform to lecture students at DePaul says your university cares very
little whether or not Churchill’s academic record is a fraud.

Read the whole letter.

DID WARD TRAIN TERRORISTS?
Wednesday October 19th 2005, 9:18 am

Did Ward Churchill train domestic terrorists on the art and science of bomb making? According to this post on Marathon Pundit, Ward is taking credit for doing just that.

I can see why DePaul wants him to lecture to their students about human rights.
